From the early '90s on, violinist Susie Hansen has led one of the most popular Afro-Cuban jazz/salsa/dance bands in the Los Angeles area. Her group works steadily and easily straddles the boundaries between salsa and Latin jazz, excelling in both areas. Hansen's long-overdue second recording is a good reflection of how her band sounds live. Four of the ten songs are instrumentals, most of the vocal tunes have some worthwhile jazz solos, and all of the music is quite danceable and somewhat joyous. In addition to the leader's swinging and singing violin, soloists include trombonist David Stout, tenor saxophonist Steve Marsh, and pianist Joe Rotondi; Justo Almario makes two guest appearances on tenor. With George Balmaseda and Ruben Esteva taking turns contributing lead vocals, there is no shortage of excitement throughout the memorable set. This disc is well done on all levels and perfect music for any Latin party.
